The best of Super Bowl Commercials 2013

It’s been easily established that the Super Bowl commercials have become equally important as the game itself especially with the rise of YouTube and other social media networks that have aided to such an increase in interest.

This increase comes at a price though; the average 30-second spot holds a heavy price tag of $4m this year. That’s almost a 90% increase from 10 years ago!

Some companies know how to squeeze every dollar out of each ad with the production of incredibly entertaining commercials that resonate with the public even way after the Super Bowl. While others not so intelligent companies simply waste an enormous amount of money on terribly-implemented ads that are forgotten almost as soon as the game ends.

We’ve decided to pick out our favorite top 10 starting the list in reverse order. Check them out and let us know what yours were!

10. Mercedes-Benz: “Soul”

“Soul”, the new Mercedes-Benz ad manages to spin the relatively dark idea of selling your soul to the devil and making it look appealing and fun. Actor Willem Dafoe, in this quite marvelous piece of casting, with his very own sharply filed nails, plays the role of the devil.

9. Tide: “Miracle Stain”

We can safely say that Tide detergent’s 2013 ad was a whole lot better than we had anticipated; in this commercial, a 49ers fan manages to get a salsa stain on his jersey that looks exactly like Hall of Fame quarterback Joe Montana. Then after an eventful twist of events his wife makes quite a vindictive move and yes washes the jersey.

8. M&M’s: “Love Ballad”

M&M’s enticed us last year with their incredibly hilarious ads. This year they bring us a clever twist with the implementation of Meatloaf’s classic “I would do anything for love, but I won’t do that”. It’s fresh to see the lusty red M&M finally coming to his sensing about the real intentions of these women.

7. Taco Bell: “Viva Young”

We’re pretty sure that anyone who has seen “Grandpa Goes Wild” teaser ad on YouTube was looking forward to viewing the full event “Viva Young”. Despite it being in Spanish, we were not disappointed. We’d definitely want to be hanging out with these senior citizens that know how to have a good time and the perk is that the cops cannot do a darn thing to stop them.

6. Doritos: “Goat 4 Sale”

Doritos ads are always hilariously creative. We all really enjoy the humor that’s employed, and rest assured “Goat 4 sale” will not disappoint. Not to spoil anything, but who knew a screaming, homicidal goat could end up being so playfully adorable?

5. Oreo: “Whisper Fight”

In 2013, Oreo brings us the “Whisper Fight”; two men start off a civil debate in a library over which is better: the cream of the cookie. Eventually things get quite heated to say the least. The ad was meant to be over the top, and it sort of is but not quite as original as the others yet the execution is most definitely perfect. What’s more amazing is the marketers behind Oreo that managed to work the blackout to their advantage and incredibly bumping up the tweets.

4. Allstate: “Apple”

Unlike the usually monotonous insurance commercials, Allstate brings actor Dean Winters and quite cleverly crafts every and any unfortunate unanticipated event that could hit your property. The “Apple” ad traces catastrophes way back from the Garden of Eden all the way to its role in the NFL replacement refs debacle in 2013.

3. Lincoln: “Steer the Script”

Lincoln’s originality steams for its formation; the whole plot is centered on user generated tweets that were submitted to Jimmy Fallon. The outcome is both creative and funny and might we add audacious. RevRun, Wil Wheaton and Emmitt Smith feature as guest appearances and despite all the fun storytelling, Lincoln still manages to talk about their product.

2. Fiat: “Topless”

Turns out advertisers have finally realized that just under half of the Super Bowl audience is actually female, and this shows because there’s a noticeable decrease in the “traditionally sexy” commercials in 2013. Even the usually crude GoDaddy commercials have toned it down and moved towards comedy this year. Yet, Fiat’s “Topless” ad definitely stands out as being the sexiest ad even for the ladies. The crawling scorpion hits just the right notes.

1. Best Buy: “Asking Amy”

Working in an IT environment, we have to say that this has to be the most hilarious Super Bowl commercial we’ve come across this year. A Best Buy employee does not know he’s in over his head when he asks Amy Poehler if she has any questions; turns out she has quite a few up her sleeve. Our favorite are “What’s the cloud?”, “Where’s the cloud?”, “OMG are we in the cloud now?!”
