Is it a Win-win situation?

GALAXY-Win
It’s official; Samsung has officially unveiled the Galaxy Win today, their latest Android handset featuring a 1.2 GHz quad-core processor and 4.7-inch display.

At first glance one might think it’s simply a copy of the Samsung Galaxy SIII, and you’re not entirely mistaken; the win is just more of a mid-range device, sporting a WVGA touchscreen, 5 megapixel rear camera and a Li-ion 2,000 mAH battery.

The release was finally confirmed by Samsung China due to the multiple leaks that have preceded the official confirmation.

The handset is integrated with 8GB of internal memory, however, this will diverge depending on the market. The device also comes with 1GB of RAM and a microSD slot that supports cards up to 32 GB.

Consumers will be able to enjoy dual-SIM support with the new Samsung Galaxy Win, as well as the ability to shoot video at a commodious 720p (15 frames per second). The playback content will be available at the same resolution; however it will be elevated up to 30 frames per second.

There is an additional VGA camera on the front, but Samsung has not declared the resolution for this one just yet.

The new handset runs on Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, but has Samsung’s TouchWiz skin stapled over the top with the accustomed banquet of OEM-specific apps and features such as “Easy Mode”, “Smart Alert” and “Motion UX”.

It will be available in two colors; Ceramic White and Titan Grey. Samsung is elucidating this as “an intuitive new smartphone designed to balance the needs of the on-the-go user with massive processing power.” While we do agree that the quad-core processor is indeed quite ample, but the specs fall behind the recently unveiled Samsung Galaxy S4.

When it comes to the price, Samsung has not yet unveiled it but as soon as it does we’ll let you know.

Why you need to backup your Smartphone?

Smartphone.

Having so much data on one’s phone would make sense to have a strategic backup plan in case of a worst case scenario, yet how many of us actually do regular backup, or better yet consider losing our data to be of paramount concern?

Big companies such as Apple, Google, and Microsoft, as well as mobile carriers such as Verizon and T-Mobile, have been smart enough to have already achieved great leaps in the data storage realm. Yet, both the companies and carriers seem to have a keen interest in centralizing the user experience to keep it trapped within the service provider or OEM device manufacturer. Logically, there isn’t any OEM (original equipment manufacturer) or carrier that would want their customer to stop using the product or service, so it makes perfect sense that they would exploit any means to keep the customer within the service.

Manufacturer giants such as Apple and Microsoft have device specific platforms that they only backup to, such as iCloud or Live.com, what this ultimately means is that in the case you would want to switch platforms from iOS to Android; your data would most likely be unavailable, or very difficult to sync. Google is smarter in the sense of taking a more convenient approach, at least if you’ve activated one of their many products such as Gmail and Picasa that would salvage your data. But, have you ever considered, after restoring your data, who really owns it? Ah, yes, it’s a very important question, and I’m sure you would want to keep your data Your Own. So how would you?

Having a device-autonomous backup service is imperative in today’s fast paced lifestyle. Product cycles that have an average of 6 months or less, OS platforms that alter almost yearly, the user ought to have the flexibility of switching carriers and manufactures as frequently as products do, and most importantly, the user ought to have the luxury of moving their data from one device to the next.

Third-party backup App such as G Cloud comes in handy in the gap left open by the retention driven OEMs and Vendors through providing cloud-based data storage and restoration to any user on any current device, oblivious of the manufacturer or carrier.

G Cloud takes it a step further by backing up SMS, call logs, Pictures, Videos, Contacts, Music and documents.

Do not wait till you get disappointed and find out you cannot move your beloved data and basically digital life from your current phone to the next best phone ever just because your current manufacturer or carrier do not provide the service. Use the device –autonomous backup to make the transition as smooth as the summer wind!

Poke to unlock; the next Facebook phone?

facebook-phone

Well, the Olympics haven’t even started yet, but it seems as though the long jump competition is already off to a kick start. Facebook has certainly captivated headlines recently, with its $1 billion Instagram purchase in April, its sudden comment-censorship in May and of course the much deliberated IPO just last week.

However, with the latest unveiling of a camera app for the iPhone , as well as a universal app store (https://www.facebook.com/AppStore) it’s becoming rather clearer that Facebook is heading in the unsettling direction of the Mobile phone platform.

The New York Times says the social network has hired six hardware and software specialists with iPhone experience with the aim to get a Smartphone to market by next year.

“Mark is worried that if he doesn’t create a mobile phone in the near future that Facebook will simply become an app on other mobile platforms,” said an anonymous Facebook employee in an interview with Nick Bilton.

This attempt is marked as the company’s third at actualizing a Smartphone into its core business; initial rumors in 2012 put the Fb Smartphone on the spot, yet the company deviated from mobile development, ostensibly due to the realization of just how difficult it actually is to plunge into building mobile hardware.

The fact that Facebook’s mobile experience can be accounted for as novice, this rumor might be a bit too farfetched, at least for now. For starters, for this to actually work out, Facebook would need to find a suitable partner to manufacture the physical device, while improving their current mobile apps excessively. Having a set of core apps, when all is said and done, is not enough; they ought to be popular, and with the not so rave Facebook-mobile app reviews, this might be a bit difficult to achieve. Sure, Facebook would have a great advantage leveraging its strengths to make a superior contact list, but it’s doubtful that will excite enough people to get on board with a Facebook phone.

What’s next? Fb TV most probably, so that everyone will be able to enjoy social updates and sitcoms.
