Still stuck in the stone age? Here’s why you should drop Internet Explorer forever!

StoneAge Microsoft Explorer

With all the latest technological enhancements, one might easily think we live in a world much similar to what “Minority Report” had predicted. However, despite all these incredibly high-tech software, security flaws remain imminent especially when it comes to operating systems and apps.

Even the “Tom Cruise” of developers is not perfect, and thus bugs do occur. Yet it is the developer’s reaction that sets the tone for the public’s response to such inconveniences; if a promise for a fix is sent and delivered on time, all is forgiven. Unfortunately, this will not be the case with Microsoft’s major glitch that was found in Internet Explorer.

We know what you’re thinking: “Who on earth is still using IE anyways?” well, you might be surprised but some actually still do and it’s very unfortunate for them; it turns out that there’s a bug that tracks mouse movement and certain key presses ( even when IE is minimized, or the tab is in the background).

This security defect harms all versions of Internet Explorer from version 6 all through 10, and a web analytics company was quick to inform Microsoft back in October. Despite Microsoft’s recognition of the matter, it does not intend to fix it any time soon. This constitutes an issue, not just because of the apparent privacy concerns, yet also for security matters. A multitude of people use software keyboards on their screen just for the sake of keeping their passwords safe from keyloggers. Yet, with this glitch, exploitative people can record the mouse movements used for entering a password just by having a web page loaded in the background.
Microsoft itself promotes the security benefits of using mice-based password system with its picture password feature in the new Windows 8. My oh my!

Here is a demo that clearly shows how one could map cursor movements. The video also indicates how some basic analysis of mouse movement can be exploited to collect private data such as passwords or phone digits. What’s even more frightening is the revelation that at least 2 ad analytics companies are already implementing this to track users; if you were not irritated towards advertisers tracking you before, then you should be now!
The website that unveiled this bug has posted a challenge just for kicks for people to attempt to analyze mouse movement. The leader board clearly shows that it requires less than half an hour for one to break down what was being typed on a software keyboard. Very scary indeed!

So, what to do now? You have two options: either switch to Chrome or Firefox, or if you’re a diehard Microsoft fan then you ought to turn off JavaScript in IE. While this does cripple the usefulness of the majority of modern websites, Microsoft leaves us no other option. So until it steps up and fixes it, don’t use IE with JavaScript turned on, and be safe!

Windows 8 is : ….

Google

We’ve all seen the funny posts comparing Google and Bing to women because of their suggested searches, but the fact is that they both are a running meme, and it’s good they are; these proposed searches give out a clear indication of the consumers’ disposition and gauge their responses when to comes to selected products. This can be intriguing, or humiliating, but mostly it is both.

Here is the evidence that needs no interpreter to comprehend. We’ve conducted a little research just a few moments ago using an Incognito Chrome window (which means in plain English, that no user was logged in to either Google or Bing). Here’s a screenshot telling us “what Windows 8 is”:

Google search
So, this means that Google users are giving a clear mark to Windows 8 and not a very good one; 1 out of 4. While we’re not sure how just of a metric this actually is, we’ll move on to see what Bing users have to say.

Bing search

Bing users showed they had more to say, with 8 results popping up. However, the ratio was surprisingly still the same; 2 favorable results out of 8. Hence, scoring the same 25% rate that Google scored. To make it all the worse, the mockeries are specific while the compliments are generic. “Confusing” and “ugly” are a lot more on the dot that “awesome” and “great”.

It’s certainly entertaining to shed light on how Microsoft’s very own search engine advocates searches that so clearly condemn the company’s essential product, however, we cannot deny that Bing and Google are indeed the pivotal search engines in the west if not in the whole world. So, if this is what people are researching, then the company most certainly has its work cut out for it when it comes to elevate people’s comprehension of its aspiring new software.

With the initial daunting sales results out already, the time is now for Microsoft to choose a story for such disappointing results and stick to it.

In case you were wondering about the Windows 7 search results, we got you covered with two snapshots, here you go:

windows 7 search

bing Windows 7

So, what seems to be the dispute? It seems that an issue in Windows 7 can indicate if a user’s copy of Window is genuine or simply fraudulent. If you’re intrigued to read more on the topic, Microsoft has a help page on the matter.

Unfortunately, we haven’t found any interesting Window 7 search results; for most of them are merely operational while those of Windows 8 indicated inquiries related to novelty. Of course, this came as no surprise.

So, while all of this might be amusing, the bottom line is that one ought to always have their back (up) for any unfortunate event when migrating or upgrading. Our recommendation would be Genie Backup Manager, since GBM supports Disaster Recovery and thus offers an easy dependable way to recover your system in all the worst case scenarios.

Mind over matter; use mind-computing on your iPad!

mind-computing

InteraXon wants to get into our brains and get in on all the juicy details that go on there; well, maybe not all the details just certain signals they need to transform into actual data that benefit developers in creating new apps that you can control with your mind.

A little too Star Trek for your taste? Well, we thought so too until we comprehended the technology behind it. Apparently our neurons, the brain cells, have happy feet and like to keep on dancing with electrical potentials that spark, dwindle and drift. If these little neurons dance on their own, then they are very quiet, however if thousands or better yet millions join in on the performance in harmony, then the generated noise can be loud enough for sensors to detect. The humongous neuronal dance parties are yes you guessed it brain rave, ops no, they’re brain waves!

Day or night, awake or asleep; these waves of activity are generated by our brains every moment of our life. This is not new, for scientists have been implementing this technology for over a century, calling it EEG (electroencephalography).

Ostensibly, researchers have concluded that different mental states result in different wave patterns; relaxed states result in gentle, slow-moving alpha wave, while immense concentration results in generating quick jagged beta waves.

InteraXon employs this in their attempts to produce a refined new technology; their latest is a wearable headband called the Muse that works on algorithms that detect these subtle changes in our brain and then showcases them in real time.

All this sounds like rainbows and butterflies doesn’t it? Well, given that the technology can transcend to the point where it’s both compatible for both the developers and users alike. Nevertheless, users will have to undergo a learning procedure, so that “signaling” with their brain becomes second nature.

The company’s target is to raise $150.000 through IndieGoGo, a crowd financing website, through auctioning its head units at a discount rate. First ones to jump on the sci-fi ship will enjoy a preorder rate that will ship for $135, while the price will go up to $200 as a final retail price tag.

Apple made the touch mainstream, Microsoft made voice and motion control conventional with Kinect. What’s next? Squinting until you unlock your screen!

How to migrate from your current Windows to Windows 8

Windows 8
The highly anticipated Windows 8 will be soon available for the public to enjoy; the enthusiasts probably already have their dates marked for the 25th of October when thousand of systems will be upgraded.

While there are a lot of people who are going to kill two birds with one stone by taking this opportunity to purchase a brand new PC with Windows 8 preinstalled, the larger percentage of users will prefer to take the upgrade route.

With Microsoft shutting down support for Windows XP SP3 and Office 2003 starting April 4, 2014 the upgrade will be mandatory for a significant number of users and organizations. Why is it mandatory you ask? Well, Microsoft itself explains that continuing to run on the soon to be obsolete versions has a lot of disadvantages. The two major ones are security & compliance risks and the lack of independent software vendor (ISV) & hardware manufacturers’ support. What we mean by security risks is that running on such unsupported environments may lead to control failure which will ultimately lead to (if an organization is involved) the suspension of certifications or even worse case scenarios. The lack of ISV is quite self-explanatory; software vendors are unlikely to provide support on new versions of application for Windows XP even starting this year, and PC hardware manufacturers will stop the support for their new PC models.

So what to do?
First and foremost is ensuring you have all your data backed up. Yes, we know that backing up your data is not usually the most fun of all tasks, and many PC users tend to neglect it, never the less it’s far more important than you think. Backups prove to be invaluable in a number of events, mainly when hard drives fail, a disaster in computing occurs, and in the more relatable case, when upgrading to a newer operating system.

If the sole thought of back up makes you cringe, immediately think of your important pictures, videos and documents and remind yourself that it’s always worth the while to save those.
So contain your upgrade enthusiasm and take the time to consider the best backup solution to save you from any malfunctions that might occur in the middle of an upgrade.
Our recommendation for a smooth transition would be to use Genie Backup Manager; GBM supports Disaster Recovery and thus offers an easy dependable way to recover your system in case of failure during the upgrade since it restores your Windows, Program Files, Documents and Settings and System State.

The backup is so simple and versatile at the same time; if you don’t like the hassle of going out and buying a new hard drive, you can simply pick up any CD and kick start the backup procedure. If you’re more of an online person, then you can always select the cloud option using the highly secure Amazon S3 cloud service provided.

Above all, make sure your hardware match the minimum requirements for the upgrade. To simplify it for you, here they are:
• Processor: 1GHz CPU or faster
• RAM: 1GB (32-bit) or 2GB (64-bit)
• Disk space: 16GB (32-bit) or 20GB (64-bit)
• Graphics: DirectX 9-capable video card with WDDM driver

Stay tuned for more similar posts that will ensure a smooth Windows 8 transition.

The Xbox Music; hit or miss?

Xbox MusicLet’s be frank, Zune from Microsoft is a horribly implemented joke; The Simpsons had a kick out of it just last week. Despite the ton of good press earned by many Zune products, it gained the reputation of being the “copy cat product no one actually wants”. Microsoft has decided to terminate the failed product and service all together and decided to replace it with the Xbox Music. The launch of the new service is set to be on Tuesday on Xbox 360 before landing on Windows 8 and Windows RT devices later this month once Microsoft’s new operating system is released.

Here’s a little more inside to the new service:

Xbox Music & Zune are not the same, but the former is a chip of the latter:
The new product shares the 30-million catalog of music and videos from the still-on going Zune service.

Here are some of the main features to look out for in the new Xbox Music:
1. Smart DJ: a swift and dynamic method to achieve a more personalized artist-based internet radio, discover new favorites and create ultimate playlists through launching instant mixes based on your preferences.

2. Xbox Music Pass: an unlimited access (including offline access that is) to the songs and artists of your choice is dropping from the $15 a month at Zune to a $10 a month. Yet, the “get 10 free songs per month to own forever” part is gone forever.

3. Xbox Music Store: a marketplace that is said to give you the chance to purchase either a single track or entire albums, just as you can do on iTunes or other popular music stores. Costs shall be comprehensive with the major stores, with most tracks costing $1.29 with discounts of whole albums. The store will be available in the same 22 markets as the Xbox Music Pass service.

4. Exclusivity: Xbox Music shall be the default music app appearing prominently on every Windows 8 PC Start screen. It’s certainly a Modern UI app, meaning it does not run on the traditional desktop and is exclusively built for touch. Meaning it is available for Windows 8, Windows RT tablet/ PC, Windows Phone 8 and Xbox of course. Microsoft promised that iOS & Android versions’ timeframe is “within the first year”, though support for other systems is a little hazy.

5. Social integration: if you’ve caught the social bug and crave immediate integration with the likes of Facebook and Twitter, to name but the major, well then you’ll have to hold on a bit. At launch, Xbox Music will be “anti-social”, with no direct integration with any social networks what so ever. However, you can always use the Share Charm on Windows 8.

6. Cloud Storage: This feature is set to be available by next year, as well as a scan-and-match feature; giving you the ability to scan your local system for music files that you own, match them to the store, and then mark them as “owned” for streaming to other devices (as long as they’re available as stream-able songs in the service). This is quite reminiscing of the iTunes Match and Amazon Cloud Player.

To further explain this feature; if you’re using a Windows 8 PC, then Scan & Match will find all the music in your “My Music” folder, which includes DRM-free iTunes AAC files, which the software can play quite well. From then on, you can see all those files on your other devices and choose to stream or download them. On the Xbox however, your only option would be to stream, yet almost all your music will be available.

To wrap things up, if Microsoft truly intends to make a smash hit out of the Xbox Music, it ought to enable broad support outside its own ecosystem; thinking outside computers and mobile devices reaching out to media-streaming products and so on. If Microsoft does continue to add value to the new Xbox Music while also amplifying its reach, then this music service will soon turn up to be the one to beat.

iPhone 5; the good, the bad and the ugly!

iPhone-5-Apple

All the around the world today, iPhone owners will be looking at their devices with sheer nausea; how could they have ever held those out dated gadgets, they shall wonder! So thick and such a small screen! Thank heavens for a new one arriving in the next couple of days.

Why yes, it’s that time of year, when Apple unveils their latest gadgets, from iPhone to iPods, and have millions of people faint from sheer excitement. Statistics speak for themselves, for according to Experian Hitwise, one in every 1,000 searches online last week in England alone was for the iPhone 5.

Despite Tim Cook’s confirmations that Apple would augment their already high level of secrecy, the Chief executive failed to stop the leakage of quite a huge amount of rumors that turned out to be true. Nonetheless, Apple did not fail to impress its die-hard fans with the message they wanted to pass through.

The new device is 20% lighter and 18% thinner than its predecessor, the iPhone 4S, yet it manages to run twice as fast, with graphics that also run twice as fast, owing to a new processor as Schiller said. The camera was also visited by the dream team, which now includes features such as a low-light mode and a panorama feature.

The iPhone 5 is Apple’s first Smartphone that is capable of 4G, the super-fast mobile broadband technology which you can read more about here.

Apple’s new announcement comes after quite a turbulent year. October of last year, just a day after the announcement of the iPhone 4S, Steve Jobs passed away. Some speculated that after the loss of the co-founder and chairman, the company would go downhill. If that is going to happen, there is very little sign of it so far.

Apple has been preoccupied with its global patent war with rival manufacturers, particularly Samsung, the Korean firm that now boasts selling more mobile devices than any other company. Samsung has conquered Apple in London, South Korea and Japan, cases in Germany have gone either way yet the big winner was Apple in the US- a verdict that awarded the iPhone creator $1 billion in damages.

Apple has, in the meantime, continued with its regular cycle of fresh products: a new iPad in March, new Macbook – together with an upgraded OS- in June, and of course a new version of iOS that the new iPhone 5 will be running on.

Some analysts feel that Apple’s weakness may lie with its operating system; since Android is evolving in an extremely swift pace with Microsoft pushing the sleekly designed Windows Phone 8, Apple could be left behind if it fails to keep up with their innovative nature.

“Without the continued innovation which we are accustomed to with Apple, the company risks losing consumer appeal. The iPhone re-defined the Smartphone category in 2007 but it cannot reply on past success to guarantee its future or rely on litigation to keep its competitors at bay.” Warned Adam Leach, an analyst with Ovum.

Apple has set out its plans for the new device but it will go on sale in a market that is tougher than ever.

Is it a bird?A plane? No it’s Microsoft’s new Tablet!

MicrosoftSurface

Is it a bird, is it plane? A tablet or a PC? Well, Microsoft’s new Surface is a bit of both!

Microsoft has on Monday developed a Window tablet computer of its own design, upending one of the world’s most successful business strategies over the past three decades.

The first commercial PC that Microsoft has designed and sold so far runs a yet-to-be released version of its Windows operation system; the Windows 8.

The new piece of hardware accentuates many of the now-standard tablet specs, such as a 10.6 inch high-definition touchscreen and front and rear facing cameras, which all fit into a 9.3 millimeter, 1.5-pound frame.

Yet Surface is more than just your typical tablet, for it brings forth new features such as the cover, for instance, that flips down to become a full keyboard. A magnesium rigid case and a pen that clicks into the tablet are among the beautiful features and add to that a built-in kickstand.

It seems that Microsoft is attempting to salvage a brand name that it has used earlier on; the first Surface hit the markets back in 2008. It was basically a giant touchscreen computer that was directed at retailers as well as other commercial customers.

Customers will be able to enjoy the new Surface on a version of Windows 8 that is called Window RT. ARM-microchips will be run on this operating system. These microchips are actually inside 95% of the world’s Smartphones as well as tablets. However, another version of Surface shall be tailored for the fuller Windows 8 operating system, which will run on Intel chips.

Though Microsoft has not disclosed any specific release dates, however, the company said that the Window RT version shall be available sometime this autumn. The customers will be able to pick between a 32 and a 64 GB versions, both that are said to be priced in accordance to other tablets already there in the market. Apple’s most basic version of the iPad sells at $499.

The full Windows 8 version will be in markets supposedly three months later in 64 and 128 GB versions. Microsoft’s price points are set to be somewhat equivalent to those of Ultrabooks, which normally sell at around $ 1,000.

Microsoft declared that it will not be the sole manufacturer of the Windows tablets. Granting all this, it’s still an unconventional turn for the world’s largest software company. What do you think? What is the preferred tablet for your taste?

Xbox SmartGlass; a collaboration with Usher and South Park?

MS-Xbox-SmartGlassThe Electronic Entertainment Expo was kicked off on Monday when Microsoft Corp. unveiled a new software called Xbox SmartGlass; a new software that will allow Xbox 360 users to stream and share content across smartphones, tablets and TVs. It also reported that the Internet Explorer browser would be brought to the console this fall.

“Internet Explorer coupled with the power of Xbox will, for the first time, deliver a fast, fluid, intuitive Web experience in the living room,” said Xbox Live corporate vice president Marc Whitten.

So how will this new Smartglass be utilized? Here are two of the ways exhibited during the Expo:
1. Your smartphone can now be turned into a remote control used to surf the Web on a TV.
2. Your tablet can be used as a means to display content about games, TV shows and movies that were simultaneously being played on a TV.

This feature is quite similar to the Wii U from Nintendo Co ;a new high-definition console that will feature a touchscreen controller which will be called Wii U GamePad. Various method and perspectives to interact and play games on the screen are also provided by the controller, not to neglect the ability to play games and browse the Web without the TV.

Microsoft exploited its E3 event to hype new installments of “Halo” and “Forza” as well as unveiling new “Gears of War” and “Dance Central” editions. On top of all of this, they released completely new titles “Ascend: New Gods” , “LocoCycle” and “Matter” all of which come from the director-producer Gore Verbinski – director of Pirates of the Caribbean of course-.

usher
Microsoft brought the bling up with a performance from Usher with his latest hit “Scream” along with several backup dancers to promote his collaboration on the choreography game “Dance Central 3”. Other celebrity appearances included Joe Montana as well as Matt Parker and Trey Stone –South Park creators- who introduced their game “ South Park: The Stick of Truth”.

“How many times have you been watching an episode of ‘South Park’ and thought, ‘I’d like to watch this on my television, while hooked into my mobile device, which is being controlled by my tablet device, which is hooked into my oven – all while sitting in the refrigerator,” joked Parker. “Well, we’re not doing that. We’re just doing this game.”

Microsoft said its voice-recognition ability for Kinect would be available in 12 more countries, and that it secured 35 new partnerships with the likes of the NBA, NHL, Univision and Viacom Inc. to provide content on Xbox 360. The company also announced it was launching a new online music service called Xbox Music.

While Facebook says “I do”, Microsoft says : ” I object” !

FacebookvsSo.cl.jpg“Oh my God, not another social network site!” Those were our exact thoughts when we first read about Microsofts’s So.cl ( pronounced “social” ) being launched yesterday. With Facebook, Twitter and G+, it is getting rather hectic trying to manage all of one’s accounts. It seems that everyone wants a bite of the social apple, yet their success is bound by either having the backing of a large Internet player, or an idea that introduces something exceptional to the scene. We have previously discussed the two platforms; Pinterest Vs Reddit.

Yesterday, it seems there was a malfunction, and the site that was in beta went live for a brief period of time; not brief enough though since the keen eyes caught up. Apparently, it has been live when first seen, then it has gone to invites for a couple of days and now it is what we have today. Our guess is that the invites had generated enough interest to go live. Is this a successful silent/ accident launch? Hmm, that is quite arguable, but it seems that the So.cl project was being used at Microsoft for months already for internal purposes, so maybe their somewhat of a secretive launch is to test the waters.

Signing up is either with your Windows Live ID or your Facebook account. If you’ve chosen the latter to sign up, you can follow your fellow Facebook buddies that are already using So.cl and then move on to start exploring some suggested topics and popular users.

So.cl combines web browsing, search and social networking with each other, according to Microsoft.
Well, here is So.cl 101:

1. As in any social network, you can follow other users to view their posts in your newsfeed. You also have the option of browsing through the global feed; though we’re not too keen as to how this might work when/if millions of users start posting.

2. Once you find a post that intrigues you, you have 5 options: you can like it, comment on it, tag it, share it or riff it. Since the last one there sounds a bit puzzling, we shall further explain it; riffing a post basically signifies posting a response to that post. For instance, if you see a post full of photos of Amsterdam, you might want to riff it to add your own photos or notes that relate to the original post. A link to the riffed post is added to the original post and vice versa. This works similarly as YouTube’s video response feature.

3. New posts are created by entering a topic of interest into the form at the top of the page. Bing is obviously the search engine behind So.cl; hence you will find images, videos and texts as well as results from feeds in the results’ listing. Content, links and tags can be manually added to your posts as well.

4. One cool feature is the ability to join and create video parties. By doing so, you will be able to create a chat room and add videos to it from various video hosting web sites. Other users can then join this room and chat about the videos that they watch, and add their own videos.

5. A bookmarklet is available that allows you to share content that you stumble upon on the internet directly to So.cl.

The video party idea is quite appealing, but is it enough to captivate let alone drive away the many Facebook fans? Humm, we think not. One disappointment already spotted is the inability to sign out; you can only do so by deleting cookies.

It is recommended of course, that new users check the settings to make sure the notification and privacy settings are to their liking. By default, emails will be sent out on a weekly basis, and notifications will be sent out when someone comments on a post/ search, tags the user, invites/sends a private message.

Well, in order not to be judgmental and prejudice, we’ve created an account to see how it actually goes, have you?

Microsoft: Destination SmartHome!

homeos

Take a step back and look around you; how many electronically/ wirelessly controlled devices can you see? Probably more than a dozen, starting with your beloved smartphone, laptop, smart air conditioning system, wireless router, light system and the list goes on and on. Every day, we are introduced to a new “smart” appliance that can automatically do a task for us, and now we can brace ourselves with the “smart home”.

This is not an entirely new concept; Control4 sells a system that allows users to control appliances from their cell phones and in-home touch screens. Google announced its Android@Home platform last year, which will also let users control appliances directly from their Android phones (starting with a wirelessly connected LED bulb).

Microsoft targeted this issue more than a decade ago, and it seems their fire has not been put off just yet.
A white paper about their work on a HomeOs and a HomeStore was published in 2012, which contained early concepts around a Microsoft Research-developed home-automation system. Last month, these same concepts have been translated into prototypes published in another white paper on the Microsoft Research site.
HomeOS aims to create “centralized, holistic control of devices in the home.” It goes beyond simply connecting a couple of gadgets; HomeOS provides a hub device that can interact with devices, power sources, sensors, lighting, and appliances to manage your home.

Microsoft is seeking to simplify the integration of new appliances, which to this date, are incapable of communicating successfully with each other. Their objective is to transform your home to a personal computer, which would make adding any new device to the network as easy as plugging in a USB mouse.

The HomeOS test bed, as illustrated in a new Microsoft Research whitepaper. (Credit: Microsoft)

The HomeOS test bed, as illustrated in a new Microsoft Research whitepaper. (Credit: Microsoft)

HomeOS has been already tested in 12 homes for four to eight months at a time. Apps that will presumably be found in the HomeStore have been developed by over 5o students and Microsoft has come up with a number of applications as well. The already-developed apps include one that turns on music when lights are turned on, an app to control a light dimmer, and an app that lets you remotely control your security cameras.

Apps that increase home energy efficiency can presumably also be created by developers; one that turns on air conditioning only when the garage door is opened, or an app that opens the shades when the thermostat hits a certain temperature.

The only ambiguity remaining is whether or not HomeOS would be only associated with the Windows platform. This might constitute a problem for the non-Windows fans, and might not transform the prototype into a mainstream product.

This is not a given though, since there are other operating system research projects and incubations at Microsoft, including Singularity (PDF) and Midori, neither of which is Windows based. Yet, the new whitepaper on the technology explained that it was built using C# and the .Net Framework 4.0.
