The Breathometer: No more DUI!

Smartphone-Breathalyzer

You know how they say, it’s always better to be safe than sorry. Well, with the latest DUI statistics, it’s safe to say this little keychain-sized device will come in handy.

Breathometer is a new breathalyzer that works with your Smartphone as a better gauge of your soberness. The pocket-sized piece of hardware easily plugs into your headphone jack. All you have to do next is blow into it and thus your result; your blood alcohol content. Yes, it’s that simple.

Charles Michael Yim, Breathometer founder, explained he had tested a couple other existing consumer breathalyzers and discovered none of which were all that convenient. They were either too bulky, too costly or too burdensome when it comes to measuring. The bigger issue is that most people did not even know consumer breathalyzers existed, and thus Yim and his team took it upom themselves to develop a more affordable and accessible device for the average user.

The Breathometer is part of an Indiegogo campaign that is structured in a way that depends on what you contribute; if someone contributes $100, they’ll be part of the company’s first drop-shipment of the device in July. However, if someone invests in just $20, they’ll have to wait until early next year.

According to a survey conducted by Breathometer and SodaHead.com, 64% of respondents showed they have either driven while intoxicated or been in a car with a driver under the influence. 67% indicated know someone who has been involved in an accident involving a DUI. And the scarier statistic of all is that 80% of respondents know someone who has been taken into custody for driving under the influence.

“Breathometer wasn’t created just to address the risks associated with drinking and driving, but to help people, their friends, and family, all to make smarter and safer choices when consuming alcohol. Real time BAC measurement is the first step,” stated Charles Michael Yim, founder and chief executive of Breathometer.

The device works well with both iOSand Android. The app makes it simple for you to connect to local transportation if you are impaired. The device will be available via Breathometer.com, the Apple iTunes App Store, and Google Play. Breathometer is awaiting approval from the Food and Drug Administration, and the company has applied for patents.

Learn-Web-Design-Web-Development-and-iOS-Development-Treehousejpg

Merely a year after its launch, the learn-to-code online company run by Interenet guru Ryan Carson Treehouse has reached $3.6m in revenues owing to its loyal 18,700 active users, 380,000 completed quizzes and 330,000 hours of tutorial videos watched on the site.

The major streak of success that has hit Treehouse caused its obvious expansion from 11 employees in 2011 to 54. It seems Treehouse are aiming to go a bit retro with their next step and target the classic print market; they’ve just announced a book deal with Wiley Publishing. Carson’s company will rival web virtuosos of the likes of Brian Solis, Get Satisfaction co-founders Lane Becker and Thor Muller as well as a multitude of others. The Treehouse franchise will initially focus on tutoring HTML, followed by CSS3 as well as iOS 6.

Treehouse already offers a solid curriculum of online video tutorials for a modest price, yet Carson seems to believe that actual books would give reach to a larger portion of learners, that may be into classical print.

“A lot of students need various learning inputs,” he stated. “Video works very well for most, but some of our students really respond to the written format. Our new book series will be a big help to those students.”

Initial foundational volumes from Wiley will cover each of Treehouse’s major areas of tutoring, which include most of the basic web programming technologies. Every book ought to bring the reader an adequate level of understanding of how to construct a website with the technology in question.

Treehouse argues to being the primary coding education platform to gain a traditional book deal, however, we were interested in finding out how Carson’s books would be set apart from the multitude of manuals that are already out there such as O’Reilly’s very once for instance.

“Treehouse Books will be the perfect complement to our online curriculum,” said Carson. “Students can either buy a physical copy or a downloadable e-book. O’Reilly’s books are great but Treehouse books are designed to strengthen those who are learning with Treehouse.”

Coding is not the only genre Treehouse is interested in; they’ve also introduced WordPress starting-off courses,a lead that non-coding books might also be hovering on the horizon. jQuery lessons as well as Android & iOS have also been introduced.

Having the support and funds from the likes of Chamth P, Reid Hoffman, Mark Suster and Keving Rose has certainly paved the way for Treehouse to become quite the overnight success, and thus acquainting the public with online education.

If you’re interested in finding out more about the company, you can simply subscribe to their YouTube Channel or view their roadmap for upcoming courses.

“The iOS 6 Maps are Amazing. Not”

iOS maps

This past week or so, we’ve been bombarded with Apple news everywhere, whether we are Apple fanatic or not, we had to listen. Yet, yesterday, it was not all sunshine and rainbows for the Tech Giant for it faced major ridicule due to its ill-performing new maps tool.

The tech behemoth abandoned Google maps and replaced it with its very own Maps App, one that operates through the usage of data that is provided by navigation systems such as Tom Tom. Yet, it seems that Apple was too quick to launch the App for users were quick to notice the many ways the company erred.
Ireland’s very own Minister for Justice, Alan Shatter, voiced his dissatisfaction with the iOS 6 system that placed an airfield in the middle of a city farm.

The 3D function also hit many faulty notes such as misplacing many well-known landmarks, placing streets over bodies of water, not to mention the foggy, distorted images.

Disappointed iPhone users were quick to share their horrific experiences by uploading their ‘map fails’ onto a Tumblr blog, which quite bluntly declare “The Apple iOS 6 Maps are amazing. Not.” iOS6 vs Google Maps

The conversation has been so viral that it became trending on Twitter with tons of dissatisfied users sharing ways of reverting to the preceding Google maps function.

Tom Tom clearly dissociated itself from the faulty App, stating it solely provided Apple with the data and was in no way responsible for how that data was used.

A spokesman justified the malfunction saying that the user experience will be enhanced once more users will start to contribute as well as adding additional features such as visual imagery.

“We are confident about our map quality, as selling 65 million portable navigation devices across the world and more than 1.4m TomTom apps for iPhone in the past two years reaffirms this quality.”

In addition to Maps, Apple has also decided to abandon its native YouTube App. A dedicated YouTube App was instantly released and surly enough, performed considerably better than its predecessor.

Well, facts are facts, and Google has a record of more than 7 years in the business of digital mapping, a period that has allowed for them to build a substantial amount of invaluable data. Apple is surly mislead if it thinks they will come even close in the next year or years. Rumor has it, that Google Maps is working on an iOS dedicated app and is just pending Apple’s approval; we don’t know about you but we’re not too keen on Apple’s approval.

Inspector gadget; What to get this season?

InspectorGadget
The fall season is almost upon us, hence all the tech rumors flying around for the toy season of the year. Christmas is right around the corner, and it won’t take you long to spot some new shiny gadget from Apple, Amazon or Google, encouraging you to spend your hard-earned cash. Nevertheless we’ve decided to aid you in keeping your pocket happy, and your tech-savvy heart even happier.

1. The new iPhone
Yes, once again, Apple has been able to stir things up with rumors flying for months now around their next flagship device that is set to hit the market just a few days from now; September 12th shall be the announcement and it should hit the markets by September 21st, as reported first by iMore in July.
Now, with all the rumors flying around, the only things we can predict regarding the new iPhone are: a bigger screen, a smaller dock connector, and 4G connectivity.

2. Nokia Windows Phone 8
Microsoft has certainly made substantial enhancements from Windows Phone 7 to Windows Phone 8, and Nokia will be producing the flagship device for the Redmond-based company. Amazingly, the new device has managed to stay under wraps, which is becoming quite a scarcity in the world of tech, the announcement has been scheduled for September 5th.

Nokia is finally seeing more clear skies with more good news; Verizon will be carrying the Nokia Windows Phone 8 device this year, according to Bloomberg. This is a good jump for the Finnish company and Microsoft, since Verizon practically eschewed the Windows Phone platform carrying only one device since its initial release in 2010.

3. Amazon Kindle Fire 2
Just behind Apple’s flagship tablet, the iPad, comes in the original Kindle Fire as the second highest-selling tablet even though it lacks many of the features that its competitors had. Well, this will not be true for very long. Many tech websites are reporting that the Kindle Fire 2 will integrate a higher resolution of 1280 x800 and a built-in camera, all this while reducing its weight and thickness. These enhancements will definitely put the Kindle Fire 2 on par with the new competitors such as the Nexus 7. The kindle Fire 2 will definitely be a big seller this fall, with a price that is expected to stay at $199 and a release date sometime this fall.

4. iPad Mini
The rumor of all rumors might just come to realization this magic fall. The smaller tablet is being built this year, after confirmation by Bloomberg and WSJ. Soon after this, news of the iPad Mini’s alleged parts began to leak,

which gave even more merit to the rumor.

Here is what we can actually confirm: the size has been consistent coming in at 7.85 inches, which is considerably larger than the 7-inch tablets currently available. The screen resolution reports have also been consistent, coming in at 1024 x 768, which is the same as the original iPad and iPad 2. That’s where the consistency stops and speculations turn up. Reported prices range from $199 to $350, and just as the new iPhone, no one can confirm what the inside will look like. Yet, what we do know is that if the iPad Mini will be released, stay tuned for it will be very soon.

5. New Nexus device
Last but not least, is Google’s soon to be released Nexus this fall, with a few bonuses. Unlike the norm, Google will not be selecting one company to build its once-a-year flagship device. This fall; Google seems to be opening up to multiple entities. As The Wall Street Journal reported, Google will be working with up to five manufacturers to build a stable of Nexus device, the first of which were the Nexus 7 ( produced by Asus) and the Nexus Q.
The next Nexus device, with two down, may be built by Samsung yet again.
Enhancements include better rear and front cameras, faster processor, and a microSD card slot,we may be getting the next Nexus device very soon.

This fall will certainly be one to remember. We hope we made your Christmas list a little more tech friendly and helpful. Let us know what you end up buying!

Adobe Connect 9

adobe

Avid Adobe fans were probably ecstatic on Tuesday when a new version of Adobe’s web conference software service –Adobe Connect 9- was released carrying very strong mobile interpretations.

Those of you carrying an Android, iOS or a Blackberry device will be pleased to find out that the entire webinar experience can be managed from the mobile device just as smoothly as if you are on your desktop. Both Adobe Connect and its mobile equivalent, Adobe Connect Mobile 2.0, have been enhanced with a significant number of modifications and features that we shall attempt to summarize for you.

1) Tailor made Event Landing Pages and Catalogs: Templates facilitate a speedy creation of landing pages, speaker information, registration pages and login pages. Templates can be personalized through rich components, including images, tables, charts and carousels.

2) Template-based Email Content and Triggers: Drag-and-drop capabilities can be implemented to easily develop email templates that can be either standard or custom.

3) Engagement Dashboard: Event engagement can now be monitored in real time. Event hosts can track how effective their messages actually are through a colour-coded meter. Future events can be now improved through tracking down critical information.

4) Online Analytics: The new analytics make it possible to score participants according to criteria of your own choosing; for example, you might classify as a hot sales lead anyone who attended for more than 15 minutes, showed a certain level of engagement, and answered “yes” to a key poll question. Through an application programming interface, Adobe Connect can then feed leads into sales and marketing applications from the likes of Salesforce.com, Eloqua, or Marketo, according to Adobe.

5) Advanced Mobile Support for Meetings and Training: Further flexibility via mobile devices can now be enjoyed by meeting hosts, as well as leveraging whiteboard and annotation tools add to that the ability to share documents from tablets, plus the cloud of course. The new features aid educators to manage virtual classrooms from devices with the same presenter and sharing option including breakout room controls.

Ultimately, the Adobe team have created great enhancement making them ahead of a lot of other webinar software companies, specifically in the mobile area. HR, retail management and pharmaceutical cases can have huge benefits from this software; no more need to fly thousands of employees for an annual agenda!

Joining a conference from a tablet is one thing- hosting and managing the whole thing from the tablet (or better yet) your phone is a whole new thing. Tablet whiteboard and annotations make for a compelling argument for a 10-inch device. Furthermore, WiFi connection nor hotspots shall be a hassle, since 3G and 4G work perfectly fine. Imagine staying on the golf course, and yet still going about your business with potential clients. There may be other players in the field, but Adobe has certainly raised the game.

Google Wallet byebye; Hello Apple PassBook!

mobilepayment

Google Wallet fans brace yourselves; Apple has once again prepared a shocking come back with its very own iOS 6 PassBook app , that is so simple yet so appealing.

Google Wallet’s Predicament

Let us explore the mobile-payment situation here in America; if you’ve ever tried to use your phone for means of buying goods or services at a retail store you probably know what a difficult task that is! Of course, if you are a Google fanatic, you can use their very own Google Wallet on one of their many Android devices out there. However, you will notice the very short list of participating vendors that are out there.

We are not trying to belittle Google by any means, for they are quite audacious to take on such an endeavor. However, NFC (Near Field Communication) has been a major hindrance in the way of their success.  Whether the problem is infrastructural, political or even financial (since their only partner is Citibank MasterCard), all we know is that fewer than 1 percent of the phones sold today have NFC chips embedded which is probably not what Google aimed for.

How will Apple change the game?

While Apple’s Passbook hasn’t been officially even released yet, but from what we can tell, it bypasses the major drawbacks of Google Wallet, particularly NFC and limited payment methods. Its sole purpose is to serve as a collector and repository for receipts, loyalty cards, and boarding passes from other retailers’ existing apps.

Infrastructural and static hardware limitations are transcended through relying on software and QR codes. The Passbook is also more versatile in the sense that apps can be added from vendors you already trust; Apple might spin this in their favor if they charge a cut to be a listed store within the PassBook app.

One major impediment is out for Apple though; this app cannot function is the store is not equipped with the special laser scanners that are built to read Smartphone screens. If we take a step back and think this through, we realize that if a store already has a retail app, then chances are it has already invested in the required infrastructure.

For now, we have to wait and see how it all goes down but our money will be definitely on a software-centered mobile-payment rather than one tied to hardware, Google listen up.

Tizen; Will it beat Android and iOS?

TizenAndroidiOS

If you think the overly debated battle between iOS and Android has been taking too much heat, well it might just fuel up even more with a new contender; Tizen!

The fresh mobile operating system, Tizen, is being co-developed by Intel and Samsung. The impressive twist that Tizen brings to the market is the fact that it not only supports programs which were coded using Samsung’s Bada SDK, yet it also supports apps that were initially meant for the Android environment (at least that’s what the Handheld Blog claims).

Heretofore, the Tizen has not impressed with their swirling three dimensional user interface elements that merely resembled a monotonous early version of Android. Yet, the Tizen Developer Conference captivated many when they showcased a rumored Galaxy S II HD LTE running the HTML5-based apps as smoothly as if they were written in native code.

A program called “Application Compatibility Layer” (ACL) will also be supported by Tizen; a program not too different from Research in Motion’s Android player for the BlackBerry PlayBook.  In case you were wondering which company is behind ACL, well it is no other than Open Mobile, and might we that they are quite proud to claim that Android apps have the ability to run on a Tizen-powered device without any compatibility problems causing you agony, although it is worth noting that this claim remains to be tested.

Another differentiation, that if proven valid, will give Tizen quite the upper hand, is that with this OS developers will be allowed to code in HTML5, CSS, and JavaScript rather than Objective-C and Java ( which, despite the misleading name, is much different from JavaScript)

Samsung ( and the other companies behind Tizen) are targeting developers with shorter development cycles and inferior costs by avoiding the eccentricity of native code. Mozilla has already attempted such a plunge with its very own Boot to Gecko , yet the financial power backing that Tizen has might actually make it a concrete competitor going forth into 2013.

The Tizen also claims to boast a similar level of responsiveness whether you using it on the device itself or on a native Android smartphone or tablet.

If this in fact turns out to be true, it’s quite safe to say that the Tizen device will actually have a bright future ahead granted that more and more hardware manufacturers decide to take up its cause.
