We cannot seem to wrap our brains around how quickly this month has passed by! August is through and here are our final top 10 Apps of the weeks for August 2012. From Apps that help you locate your car, Apps that block your notifications when you’re driving all the way to spy-like Apps that allow you to get more information than Sherlock Holmes. Music lovers are never forgotten as well as faithful researchers so be sure to check them out and let us know what your thoughts are.

1. Car Locator (Get it for your android) $3.99
Once you’ve parked, the app is easy to set up. When you’re ready to return to your car, Car Locator uses GPS and Google Maps to activate radar and a map to tell you where the car is. Then it displays the current distance between you and the car, plus the direction of your car from where you are. We especially like the feature that tells you how long your car has been parked. For people prone to getting tickets for not feeding the meter in time, it’s a lifesaver.

2. Drive Off (Get it for your android) Free
One of the causes of road accidents is using the phone while driving. It is always advised not to text or answer calls while driving. But, since we live in a very hectic environment, we are usually tempted to answer the phone or reply to our text messages. The DriveOFF app sees these driving hazards and promotes safety by killing all your notifications sounds while you are driving. It will also launch a background, blocking your view of your phone’s screen.

3. Secret Audio Recording (Get it for your android) Free

The Latina musical notation might be foreign to you, but if you need to learn it quickly, CDo is the best app for that.

Aug 23rd

We’re back for the penultimate top 10 Apps for August. You can finally enjoy Pinterest on your Android, monitor your running habits with Runtastic, finally capture those fireworks with your phone Cam but brace yourself for probably one of the best photo filtering Apps out there (and yes not Instagram nor Pixlr-o-Matic). Enjoy and let us know what your thoughts are!

1. Sound Around (Get it for your android) Free
If you’re stuck in an office where you have to sit with your back to a walkway or the entrance to your cubicle, you know how startling it can be when you’re listening to music and someone walks up behind you and taps you on the shoulder. Around Sound for Android makes sure that never happens again—the app uses the microphone on your headset or your phone as an extended ear, and if a loud noise is detected, the app will pause your music so you can pay attention.

2. Pinterest (Get it for your android) Free
Pinterest, the social network that lets you share your interests and opinions, using pictures, has finally got an Android app. It is well worth a download for all those who believe in letting pictures say a thousand words.

3. Runtastic (Get it for your android) Free
Of all the ways to get into shape, running is considered as one of the best. For your next run, jog or walk, bring alone your Android phone with Run-Tastic installed, and track and record your workout. Run-Tastic will not only tell you how far you’ve gone during your workout, but also will provide a detailed map, your altitude and even your heart rate when connected to a heart rate monitor using the GPS capabilities built into your device.

4. Photo Editor by Aviary (Get it for your android) Free
Aviary’s mission statement is to “Make the world’s creation accessible.” Although their mission is a little ambiguous, their free image editing application is surprisingly robust for tools you can access completely for free.

5. MoboPlayer (Get it for your android) Free
An alternative video player to the normal Android player. Playback is smooth and clear and the menus and options available are quite extensive. The user interface is really nice too and the app has a high quality feel to it. The app supports all video formats and allows you to create playlists and organize your video library.

6. Critical Strike Portable (Get it for your android) Free
From the responsible Finnish Indie developer comes the launch of the first person shooter “Critical Strike Portable”, which was released in June 2012. It’s a Unity 3D remake of the old and beloved Counter Strike 1.6 and supports cross platform multiplayer games for shooter fans all over the world.

7. G Cloud Backup (Get it for your android) Free
The cheapest Backup App there is! Backup all those summer pictures, Contacts, Sms texts, call logs, videos and all your documents 1 GB for free. If you’ve got more than that you can upgrade for as low as $ 0.99 for a whooping 10 GB!

8. Fast Burst Camera Lite (Get it for your android) Free
The app itself is pretty easy to use, fire it up, point it at something, and then hold the button! We did find that if we kept our thumb down on the button until it stopped (97 photos), it did take a while for the app to empty its cache whilst it saved the images to memory. The one thing we would like is a zoom option, which is available in the full version priced at £3.45 .

9. Apex Launcher (Get it for your android) Free
This App maintains the stock look&feel or Android Ice Cream Sandwich, while adding a ton of terrific functionality. Even after a lot of customization, it feels super fast. It lets you change everything about the ICS launcher; number of columns & rows to fit more icons, resize any widget, change the way folders look, customize the app drawer & you can even use a lot of gestures to make launching apps or accessing certain settings super easy.

10. 100 Floors (Get it for your android) Free
This is a game of many levels where you need to open doors to advance to the next level, to get to the next floor you need to solve many puzzles where you need to tilt, swipe, pinch, poke etc. It is very hard not to cheat to advance to the next floor, you only got to search Google by typing in “100 Floors” and all you see is cheats and walkthroughs.
Republic Wireless… Unlimited Text, Talk and Web for $19!
Nov 2nd
![]()
Bandwidth.com, is launching a new phone carrier service next week. With such a nifty price what comes in mind is that they will raise their price by the end of the month. But with their new technology “Hybrid Calling” their service will rely on wireless networks (WiFi) and fall back onto a phone carrier service, most likely sprint when out of range.
Sounds familiar? Well yes, we all know that some carriers like T-mobile have UMA (Unlicensed Mobile Access), but unlike T-Mobile, where you wont be switched automatically to WiFI when you initiate the call on their cell network, deducting unnecessary minutes. Rebulic wireless will automatically switch to WiFi instead of using the cell service. This might not be a great advantage since the plan is unlimited, but they also promise that there is no bandwidth cap.
The only catch is that you will need to purchase a dedicated device and since there is no contract it seems you will have to pay the device in full, but hey, $19 will be worth it especially to those who travel abroad and need to a cheap way to call the states. So fingers crossed on the pricing and quality of the device.
Here are the basics, from what we’ve heard from beta testers and the company:
- The service will use what it’s calling “Hybrid Calling” — your phone will rely primarily on Wifi, whenever it’s available. It will fall back on cell networks, such as Sprint, when you aren’t connected to Wifi.
- Users will not have to manually switch between Wifi and cellular — the phone will figure it out automatically
- The service will require users to get a new phone. It’s unclear that whether there will be multiple models available initially, but the phone runs on Android.
- The first cellular network that’s available as the fallback will be Sprint. The company might be planning, or already in the process, of signing other carriers onboard
- The phone will have one phone number (no swapping between numbers for VoIP/cellular)
- You’ll be able to send both calls and texts via Wifi
- We’re hearing that pricing details are still being finalized, but they’re described as being much cheaper — perhaps around half as much — than anything else available for an Android device (i.e. a smartphone) through the traditional carriers, basically what we are hearing that it’s $19/mo/
- No contracts so it seems that there a no strings attached.

How do you use Timeline
May 23rd
Timeline was created with the end user in mind. It is a backup tool that can easily work for anyone from an accountant, to a gamer, to a stay at home parent.
People use computers for many reasons; different schedules and ways in which computers are used result in custom backup schemes and plans. Whether you are a doctor or an architect, you backup all of your drives or create specific rules and backup certain extensions; we would like to hear from you.
In the comment section below please write to us about how you use Timeline to backup.
How can we keep up in this fast-paced world?
Apr 20th
In today’s fast paced world, data is becoming integrated into our lives more and more. Conventional backup utilities need constant user attention and scheduling to ensure that your rapidly growing and changing data is protected; with that attention comes the hassle and knockbacks of creating up-to-date and continuous backups.

Genie Timeline introduces a new generation of backup utilities based on Continuous Data Protection, your data is automatically and constantly monitored for additions and changes. Set it and forget it, backups are taken periodically without any hassle or pop ups and will have absolutely no impact on system performance.

Genie Timeline needs zero maintenance, zero scheduling and uses up zero resources, and with the future bringing cloud integration, your data can be stored safely on offsite storage giving you peace of mind.

The Disaster Recovery option in Timeline creates a backup of your boot drive, in case of system failure Timeline will restore your system to a previously working state along with all of your important data.

Creating backups has never been this simple, 2 or 3 simple steps and you are on your way, Timeline is smart enough to sense when you are using your computer or when it is idle and will take advantage of that fact to speed up backups.

Users can stay up-to-date with the status of their backup via email and very soon through their iPhone or iPad, which also provides a neat way of data archiving.

Timeline comes in three different versions; Free, Home and Professional.
You can check out a full comparison of the versions by following this link:

How to Backup
Apr 15th
You may have heard the news that our latest product Timeline 2.0 has hit the stores, and with a completely free version it is time to write out the easiest way to get your backups done.
Step 1: Get yourself an USB External Storage device
An external Hard Drive is the best form of media to create backups on, it is widely available, becoming increasingly cheap and is very durable and simple to setup. You can get any brand of external hard drives such as WesternDigital, Lacie, Seagate, Toshiba or other brands with a 1TB capacity for as low as $80.
Setting up your hard drive is easy, connect your external hard drive to the USB port, plug it in and you should be able to see it under my computer in a little while after Windows detects the new hardware and automatically recognizes it and installs it. External hard drives can also be connected through Firewire and eSATA connecters and Timeline will be able to pick them up automatically.
Step2: Setup your backup
Okay, now that you have your hard drive setup and want to begin your backup, download Timeline and install it. As soon as the program finishes the setup you will be presented with the first screen which is the “Backup Setup Wizard” click next to select your backup drive.

Timeline will automatically detect your new hard drive and you will be able to select it by pressing on it and then pressing next, Timeline also shows all the drives that you have available and recommends what drives to select. If you are using a wireless hard drive you will have to use “Select a different destination” and browse for your hard drive.

Next step is the “Select Data” page, Timeline by default will include all smart selections which include your email, documents, desktop, office files, financial files, eBooks and PDF’s, internet bookmarks, pictures, music and videos and scan for them automatically, if you feel there are a couple of these selections that you do not need in your backup press the “Customize selections button” and uncheck them.

If you are using the professional or home version of Timeline the last step includes more backup options such as compression to reduce backup size and encryption to enforce security on your files.
That’s it! You’re all set, just sit back and watch your protection level increase. If Timeline detects a large number of files it may take a while to finish the initial backup which is why it is recommended to leave your pc on overnight, Timeline senses an idle pc and goes into Turbo mode for faster backups if you use your pc again Timeline will switch back to smart mode for a faster computer.
What impact will Timeline have on my machine?
After the initial backup is done, Genie Timeline will work silently in the background and will have no impact on your computers performance. If Timeline detects there are new files or your old files have changed it will periodically back them up.
