Your ultimate Mother’s day gift guide!

Mother's Day Gift Guide

Being a mother is the toughest job on earth, not a single human being can argue with that. She is the one who held your hand, put on those band-aids and kissed your “boo-boos” away as opposed to your dad who told you to man up and rub some dirt in it. She’s also the one who sewed up your worn out Star Wars blanket long after it had seen better days, and it was her as well who cleaned your mess after you had broken the VCR by shoving those beloved peanut butter sandwiches of yours inside.

Now that we are “legally” grownups, it is time for us to repay our moms for all the craziness we put them through. So make the dinner reservations, buy the flowers and as for the gift, we are here to help. Here are 10 tech gift ideas to show your beloved mom how much you appreciate her not being so traditional and old-school and thus rewarding her with the latest in the gadget world.

1. Amazon Kindle Paperwhite

Is your mom an absolute tablet hater? If so, a Kindle Paperwhite is probably your best substitute especially for anyone with a passion for reading. Besides, future gift-giving is also thought of with Amazon gift cards. Quite brilliant, right?

2. Google Play Gift Card

Speaking of gift cards, did you know they’re also available for Google Play? These were only inaugurated a couple of months ago and are now available in $10, $25 and $50 packs. These are nice to be given alone or to compliment an Android device.

3. Apple iPad mini

We plead forgiveness from you father of tech for we have sinned and recommended an Apple product. Okay, we may have exaggerated but yes we do prefer Android. However, if your mother or wifey is more iOS inclined then an iPad mini is a befitting tablet that is thin, light and rather affordable.

4. Just Dance 3

What’s cool about the Kinect as well as other motion control mechanisms is that it exposed gaming to a much greater audience. Along with the opportunity to innocently have a laugh at the ones you love, which is where Just Dance 3 fits right in. It’s a great way to get some exercise as well.

5. Roku 3

What makes the Roku family of streaming devices (and the Roku 3 in particular) so amazing is their design; it’s designed in a way that makes it simple for every skill level. Roku’s interface is extremely easy to navigate, making even the least tech savvy moms rock Netflix and other streaming channels like a rock star.

6. USB Tulip Hub

Fact: One can never have enough USB ports, it’s quite unquestionable. Second Fact: your mom loves flowers. What do you get when you combine these two together? Well, the USB Tulip Hub of course!

7. Star Wars Death Star Tea Infuser

Geekery is never bond by gender or age, and it’s very likely that your own passion for technology was inherited from your mom. She might have taken you as a toddler to see Star Wars and was just as upset to find out the franchise had been sold to Disney. If it so happens that your mother drinks tea then your search for the perfect gift ends here and now; The Star Wars Death Star Tea Infuser is what you need.

8. SkinIt Skin

Does your electronic device need a revamp? Well, the right skin or case always does the trick and which SklnIt, you can choose from a variety of different designs. If you cannot find the one that speaks to you, then you can always upload your own picture (a baby picture of you and your mom for instance). That would be quite interesting for your mother.

9. HTC One

For the penultimate gift idea we bring you a powerful, big screen and of course Android Jelly Bean phone. It’s probably been a while since your mom got a phone upgrade so why not entice her with a lovely HTC One.

10. Barnes & Noble Nook HD/HD+

Last but not least, we bring you the Barner & Noble Nook; no don’t you roll your eyes on us just yet! There are two legitimate reasons we would recommend a Nook: first being that B&N just recently added Google Play access to the equation, moving these devices beyond the glorified eReader status. Second, they are on sale for Mother’s Day for the marginal price starting at $149!

Still stuck in the stone age? Here’s why you should drop Internet Explorer forever!

StoneAge Microsoft Explorer

With all the latest technological enhancements, one might easily think we live in a world much similar to what “Minority Report” had predicted. However, despite all these incredibly high-tech software, security flaws remain imminent especially when it comes to operating systems and apps.

Even the “Tom Cruise” of developers is not perfect, and thus bugs do occur. Yet it is the developer’s reaction that sets the tone for the public’s response to such inconveniences; if a promise for a fix is sent and delivered on time, all is forgiven. Unfortunately, this will not be the case with Microsoft’s major glitch that was found in Internet Explorer.

We know what you’re thinking: “Who on earth is still using IE anyways?” well, you might be surprised but some actually still do and it’s very unfortunate for them; it turns out that there’s a bug that tracks mouse movement and certain key presses ( even when IE is minimized, or the tab is in the background).

This security defect harms all versions of Internet Explorer from version 6 all through 10, and a web analytics company was quick to inform Microsoft back in October. Despite Microsoft’s recognition of the matter, it does not intend to fix it any time soon. This constitutes an issue, not just because of the apparent privacy concerns, yet also for security matters. A multitude of people use software keyboards on their screen just for the sake of keeping their passwords safe from keyloggers. Yet, with this glitch, exploitative people can record the mouse movements used for entering a password just by having a web page loaded in the background.
Microsoft itself promotes the security benefits of using mice-based password system with its picture password feature in the new Windows 8. My oh my!

Here is a demo that clearly shows how one could map cursor movements. The video also indicates how some basic analysis of mouse movement can be exploited to collect private data such as passwords or phone digits. What’s even more frightening is the revelation that at least 2 ad analytics companies are already implementing this to track users; if you were not irritated towards advertisers tracking you before, then you should be now!
The website that unveiled this bug has posted a challenge just for kicks for people to attempt to analyze mouse movement. The leader board clearly shows that it requires less than half an hour for one to break down what was being typed on a software keyboard. Very scary indeed!

So, what to do now? You have two options: either switch to Chrome or Firefox, or if you’re a diehard Microsoft fan then you ought to turn off JavaScript in IE. While this does cripple the usefulness of the majority of modern websites, Microsoft leaves us no other option. So until it steps up and fixes it, don’t use IE with JavaScript turned on, and be safe!

What do you want to learn today?

Learn-Web-Design-Web-Development-and-iOS-Development-Treehousejpg

Merely a year after its launch, the learn-to-code online company run by Interenet guru Ryan Carson Treehouse has reached $3.6m in revenues owing to its loyal 18,700 active users, 380,000 completed quizzes and 330,000 hours of tutorial videos watched on the site.

The major streak of success that has hit Treehouse caused its obvious expansion from 11 employees in 2011 to 54. It seems Treehouse are aiming to go a bit retro with their next step and target the classic print market; they’ve just announced a book deal with Wiley Publishing. Carson’s company will rival web virtuosos of the likes of Brian Solis, Get Satisfaction co-founders Lane Becker and Thor Muller as well as a multitude of others. The Treehouse franchise will initially focus on tutoring HTML, followed by CSS3 as well as iOS 6.

Treehouse already offers a solid curriculum of online video tutorials for a modest price, yet Carson seems to believe that actual books would give reach to a larger portion of learners, that may be into classical print.

“A lot of students need various learning inputs,” he stated. “Video works very well for most, but some of our students really respond to the written format. Our new book series will be a big help to those students.”

Initial foundational volumes from Wiley will cover each of Treehouse’s major areas of tutoring, which include most of the basic web programming technologies. Every book ought to bring the reader an adequate level of understanding of how to construct a website with the technology in question.

Treehouse argues to being the primary coding education platform to gain a traditional book deal, however, we were interested in finding out how Carson’s books would be set apart from the multitude of manuals that are already out there such as O’Reilly’s very once for instance.

“Treehouse Books will be the perfect complement to our online curriculum,” said Carson. “Students can either buy a physical copy or a downloadable e-book. O’Reilly’s books are great but Treehouse books are designed to strengthen those who are learning with Treehouse.”

Coding is not the only genre Treehouse is interested in; they’ve also introduced WordPress starting-off courses,a lead that non-coding books might also be hovering on the horizon. jQuery lessons as well as Android & iOS have also been introduced.

Having the support and funds from the likes of Chamth P, Reid Hoffman, Mark Suster and Keving Rose has certainly paved the way for Treehouse to become quite the overnight success, and thus acquainting the public with online education.

If you’re interested in finding out more about the company, you can simply subscribe to their YouTube Channel or view their roadmap for upcoming courses.

facebookCensord

It seems Facebook has been swooping the headlines lately by storm for a number of different reasons; this weekend has been no exception.
Apparently on Saturday morning there was a bit of a stir going on in Blog land. Max Woolf a Carnegie Mellon student and avid TechCrunch commenter had posted about our contemporary blog scene. His comment apparently scored high points with the well-known tech startup enthusiast, Robert Scoble as he set out to state his agreement with Woolf’s convictions yet of course adding a few of his own as well.

Surprisingly, his comment did not get through, as this message appeared:

Facebookmessage

While this “censorship” has received a lot of mixed reviews, Facebook remains firm on its policies against abusive or harassing behavior, since they are eager to create an environment of safe and righteous content.
The issue of a comment being “positive” or “negative” could be quite debatable; Facebook is not only restricted to one country or continent, therefore cross-cultural misunderstanding are not out of the question. In an attempt to solve this issue though, the company resorts to a combination of software algorithms and notifications from other users to identify inappropriate behavior.

Facebook have already contacted Scoble, signifying that his comment had been marked as “Spam” due to two main reasons : first being that he and Max are not friends; Scoble is only subscribed to Max, making his comments subject to more strict scrutiny. The second reasons is due to the fact that Scoble’s comment included three “@” links, making it look even more suspicious.
Our personal views are that Facebook is a private company in the end, and it’s completely up to them to dictate the way they run their business. This is the core difference between Government censorship and Private Company censorship, if we might call it as such. If we are to compare the two; with the latter, you have the luxury of simply not using their service and moving on to another that permits more freedom or is more in agreement with your needs. However, when it comes to the former, the choice is substantial (life, death, imprisonment, war).

Hence, Facebook is a luxury and not a right. A lot of people enjoy using it and yet they seem to forget one essential actuality; they willingly signed up, on their terms, to use their free service. So, if Facebook decided they could be served ads and be a market for games and other products in return to let you have access to their site, it’s completely their choice.

It seems Facebook are trying to do a new thing every single day, and while people may not welcome these changes with arms wide open, they are forced to yield eventually. Our only hopes remain that these new policies do actually contribute to removing actual spam and not “false positives”.

Go Green this Earth Day

recycle-symbol

As Gaylord Nelson once said :“The ultimate test of man’s conscience may be his willingness to sacrifice something today for future generations whose words of thanks will not be heard.”
These are some sound words to resonate in our minds as we celebrate the 42nd  anniversary of Earth Day.

Earth Day went global in 1990, when an estimated 200 million joined the movement and helped ignite the recycling craze.

According to earthday.org , more than 1 billion people will participate in Earth Day 2012 events on April 22. The global event celebrates the beauty of our planet and calls on individuals, organizations, companies and governments to do their part to ensure the preservation of the planet.

We believe if each and every one of us contributed, no matter how little, we would witness a huge difference. Here are some of our suggestion to help our planet :

1. CHANGE YOUR LIGHT
If every household in the United State replaced one regular lightbulb with one of those new compact fluorescent bulbs, the pollution reduction would be equivalent to removing one million cars from the road.

2. RECYCLE GLASS
Recycled glass reduces related air pollution by 20 percent and related water pollution by 50 percent. If it isn’t recycled it can take a million years to decompose.

3. DIAPER WITH A CONSCIENCE
By the time a child is toilet trained, a parent will change between 5,000 and 8,000 diapers, adding up to approximately 3.5 million tons of waste in U.S. landfills each year. Whether you choose cloth or a more environmentally-friendly disposable, you’re making a choice that has a much gentler impact on our planet.

4. GO VEGETARIAN ONCE A WEEK
One less meat-based meal a week helps the planet and your diet. For example: It requires 2,500 gallons of water to produce one pound of beef. You will also also save some trees. For each hamburger that originated from animals raised on rainforest land, approximately 55 square feet of forest have been destroyed.

5. WRAP CREATIVELY
You can reuse gift bags, bows and event paper, but you can also make something unique by using old maps, cloth or even newspaper. Flip a paper grocery bag inside out and give your child stamps or markers to create their own wrapping paper that’s environmentally friendly and extra special for the recipient.

6. ADJUST YOUR THERMOSTAT
Adjust your thermostat one degree higher in the summer and one degree cooler in the winter. Each degree celsius less will save about 10% on your energy use! In addition, invest in a programmable thermostat which allows you to regulate temperature based on the times you are at home or away.

7. TAKE A SHORTER SHOWER
Every two minutes you save on your shower can conserve more than ten gallons of water. If everyone in the country saved just one gallon from their daily shower, over the course of the year it would equal twice the amount of freshwater withdrawn from the Great Lakes every day.

8. RECYCLE OLD CELL PHONES
The average cell phone lasts around 18 months, which means 130 million phones will be retired each year. If they go into landfills, the phones and their batteries introduce toxic substances into our environment. There are plenty of reputable programs where you can recycle your phone, many which benefit noble causes.

9. RECYCLE UNWANTED WIRE HANGERS
Wire hangers are generally made of steel, which is often not accepted by some recycling programs. So what do you do with them? Most dry cleaners will accept them back to reuse or recycle. (Cue Joan Crawford)

10. INVEST IN YOUR OWN COFFEE CUP
If you start every morning with a steamy cup, a quick tabulation can show you that the waste is piling up. Invest in a reusable cup, which not only cuts down on waste, but keeps your beverage hot for a much longer time. Most coffee shops will happily fill your own cup, and many even offer you a discount in exchange!

Green Fashion
Another unconventional method to celebrate this special day can be throughout fashion, yes  you heard us right! Kyle Retzik, owner of Skunkfunk USA, stated:

“Skunkfunk is an eco-conscious company; we employ sustainable business practices in every aspect of the business, from our selection of materials to the way we ship our products. We even produce reusable bags out of our fabric scraps.”

Green Gadgets

The nPower® PEG
The nPower® PEG is the world’s first passive kinetic energy charger for personal hand-held electronics. It’s very easy to use as mentioned on their website; all you have to do is place the nPower® PEG vertically in your bag, and it harvests your own kinetic energy as you walk, storing it for use whenever, wherever you need it.
The PEG has a 2000 mA lithium polymer battery on board, capable of charging an iPhone 3 to 100%, and an iPhone 4 to about 75%. It weighs 14 ounces. PEG will go on sale online in about a month, retailing for US$169.99.

Meet the first learning thermostat
The Nest Learning Thermostat is aiming to change the way we approach heating and cooling with the technology; It remembers your temperature preferences for times throughout the day and programs itself to create a personalized schedule. Nest connects to your Wi-Fi giving you the option to remotely adjust your temperature from your smartphone or any web browser.

So take a moment and reflect on how beautiful our nature is, and let us work together so that our children as well as many generations to come could enjoy it too. Here is an inspirational video to spark your senses.

Life’s a Picnik…

byebyepicnik

Life will not be a Picnik anymore for all you journalists and bloggers out there as of today, April 19th !
Yes, we’re sad to say, the web-based photo-editing tool that saved immeasurable journalists on a deadline is shutting down. It was quite simple, true, yet it came in handy when you needed some basic edits instead of firing up photoshop.

The Silver lining though, was that the premium services – which include cool special effects plus a ton of touch-up features – were free for everyone.

Yes, we know that switching to a new digital tool can be extremely daunting, especially if it’s a tool you use every day and are comfortable with, but let’s face it, we’re living in a fast paced world and we have to cope. Just take an hour off your schedule, it’ll be more than enough to find an alternative. In case you’re still bewildered, here are our alternatives :

1. Fotoflexer This site offers a similar web-based photo editor with much of the same options as Picnik, though nowhere near as snappy to load. Advanced features include blemish fix and some easy-to-use layer functions; the web interface is available in 22 languages. If it looks familiar, you may already be using it on Picasa, Flickr, Photobucket and Facebook. One cool feature from the web browser version: you can edit live images taken with your computer’s built-in camera.

2. Photoshop Express Online There’s no need to spend a couple hundred bucks on Photoshop when you can access Photoshop Express Online for free. While it’s not nearly as feature-rich as the software program, it offers plenty of photo editing options that will likely be more than sufficient for what you need. Other fun effects online include Dodge and Burn (making certain spots lighter or darker), Crystallize and Pixelate. Photoshop Express also offers a fantastic free app for editing photos on-the-go with Photoshop Express for iOS and Photoshop Express for Android.

3. Pixlr Express Another great site is Pixlr Express. It recently launched and is a quick and easy way to moderately or drastically edit photos, depending on your needs. In addition to fun photo effects like “bubbly” or “foggy,” there are also quick ways to enhance portraits with features like red-eye removal and teeth whitening (hi coffee drinkers!). Of all the sites listed here, I find the interface to be the most intuitive and modern. Also available as a free Android or iPhone app.

4. Snapseed If you haven’t taken the leap to Snapseed, get thee to the download! It’s an amazing way to tweak and edit photos, and partly why some of those Instagram photos you see look so amazing.

5. PicMonkey We’ve saved the best for last; you will love how quick, easy and completely free this handy site and app is. In fact, you might not even miss Picnik afterall!

So, stay calm and blog on…

Apple/Google TV? No,thanks.I’ll have an Uppleva please!

ikea

Pop quiz;
what’s the common thread between Samla, Sätta ihop
and elektronik? If your answer was: why that’s simple it’s gather, assemble and electronics of course! Chances are you’re either a Swede or spent too much time assembling Ikea furniture!

Either way, we’re confident you are going to be thrilled with their latest soon-to-released product; Uppleva.

The world’s largest furniture maker has joined forces with Chinese consumer electronics firm TCL to launch an all-in-one solution to all the media hassle. The HTDV home entertainment system is much more than just a sleek looking TV; it has speakers built into its base, a wireless subwoofer, integrated cable storage, an Internet connection, CD, DVD and a Blu-ray player all controlled with one simple remote. Sounds incredible doesn’t it? We thought so too, the only downside would be trying to assemble it at home!

Moreover, IKEA’s living room chief, Magnus Bondesson told Reuters “This is a large step for us. We will have an offer that is unique in the market” .

It is rumoured that Uppleva will be launched in five European cities in June (Stockholm, Milan, Paris, Gdansk, and Berlin) , throughout seven European countries this autumn( Italy, France, Poland, Denmark, Spain, Norway, and Portugal), and in its remaining markets by the summer of 2013.

Prices start at 6,500 Swedish Kroner (around $950), sure that may be far more expensive than the Apple Tv ( $99.00) and Google Tv that has been slashed down to $99.00 as well. However, Uppleva is incomparable to both of those, since it has far more options; it’s a whole entertainment system and to make it more appealing, the TV screens are available in four sizes, from 24 inches to 46 inches, and in a range of colors including gray, black and blue. Users are also able to plug in their iPods or other mp3 music players.

We leave you off with a video of this incredible new innovation, enjoy:

SmartWatch?

w.

As we all know, men tend to have a strange frenzy when it comes to tech gadgets, and with the massive explosion of the smart phone phenomena, we’re witnessing many companies taking advantage.

Sony is certainly one of those companies; incorporating one of the classic accents that many men have enjoyed wearing for ages, launching  their Sony SmartWatch ( Link) this Wednesday finally in the U.S for just $149. What’s a SmartWatch you ask? Well, it’s a normal watch; tells the time but from a 1.3-inch OLED display, that also has the capability of displaying the user’s emails, text messages and even controls music if you please.

Here’s a video for this Sony SmartWatch

It connects to any Bluetooth-enabled Android 2.1-based (and above) device, but of course requires an app on your device to be installed.

The only down side to this watch is that it only runs on Android,so if your guy’s an avid iOS user, or likes to switch phones a lot ( like many men, let’s face it!) there’s another SmartWatch called InPulse Pebble (Link) that runs on both operating systems, priced the same as Sony, leaving the latter to fall back for this mere fact.

However, there are more differences between the two; The Sony watch has a snazzy touch display, but the functional e-paper watch face of the Pebble is viewable in direct sunlight. The battery life of the Pebble claims to last for seven or more days, while a CNET review of the Sony device puts its longevity at two days, max. To make matters worse for Sony, the Pebble has reached $2 million in funding. if that weren’t enough, InPulse, the company that makes the Pebble, only ever asked for $100,000 over the course of the entire project.

So, if you’re short on ideas and in need of a sparkly present, a SmartWatch would be an ideal option, even though we believe a Cartier watch never goes out of fashion.

Tip of the day: Schedule your backup!

Did you know Genie Timeline 2012 can now schedule backups?

Yes, finally, long gone are the days when you were stuck in an automatic predetermined time interval! Genie Timeline now allows you to schedule the backup to occur to your preferred time and date. Whether it is 3am or 11pm, you can choose when and what is backed up at your comfort. You can make it recurring to run at a specific hour on a specific day; enabling this feature is as easy as clicking on the “Tools” menu from the dashboard then “Advanced Settings” and finally click the second option on the left “ Backup Schedule” and you’re good to go. If you were comfortable with the time interval, you can still do that by choosing a specific run whenever it suits you. Alternatively, you can customize your schedule when to start and when to end, or just select a starting time. Another beneficial option is choosing what your PC/laptop does after Genie completes its magic; you can choose to hibernate/ sleep/ shut down or simply do nothing!

br

Finally, we leave you with a case study of one of our users who sent us this letter just recently.

The new feature’s contribution has been invaluable to my daily life.
As a writer, my creative drive strikes each day at midnight, once everyone has fallen into their comfortable retreats, that’s when I can finally find the serenity I so long for. If you’re a writer, I’m confident you can relate!
The clock strikes 12:00 and consequently the ideas come rushing as a flowing river, my only option would be to yield myself and be driven to wherever this uncontrollable force takes me, and as they say “strike the iron while it’s hot”; hence I must thank the Lord for not having a writer’s block and begin my endeavour. It may take me hours to finish an article, since I always set out to perfect every writing pursuit. So, it would usually be 3 or 4 am before I put the last finishing touches and head to my beloved bed. This is when it’s essential for a backup to run, to save my work so that I won’t lose my nerves (or my job) if my laptop crashes for some reason or another.
Previously, we could not set a certain time interval for a backup; it either ran every hour/ 3 hours /8 hours or so, and it may have even crammed up our space or worse, missed out on an important change in a file.
Now, since my writing scheme is the same day to day, I can set Genie Timeline to run after I have pulled together all the bits and pieces of my targeted article, and I can rest assured that my hard work will not vanish into thin air.
