Introducing Genie Timeline 2.0
Genie-soft proudly introduces our latest software Genie Timeline 2.0
Genie Timeline 2.0 comes in three different editions; Home, Professional and FREE!
Timeline 2.0 is the first backup software that has a completely Free edition which includes such features as automatically backing up your Email, documents and office files, financial files, eBooks and PDFs, Internet bookmarks and favorites, pictures, music and videos in 2 simple steps.
As for Genie Timeline Home and Professional editions, we brought the term “set it and forget it” to life; we revolutionized the backup process and took the backup software solution to a completely new level. Unlike its predecessor, we added Disaster Recovery, backup markers, multiple performance modes and much more.
Genie Timeline will take its user to the maximum level of data protection, saving both time and money, it is simply just what you need for data backup and restore.

Except that Free appears, per your features list, not to be able to restore files.
You should either free that feature, or just stop offering a useless “free” level backup.

Hello,
I work with Genie-soft and I was just wondering which feature list you observed because our free edition is complete and has many restore options such as restoring from the Timeline in Timeline Explorer and using our search feature. You can easily right click to restore a file or drag and drop files.
Our free edition is a complete, continuous backup solution
To read more about it please visit our website: http://genie-soft.com/Free_products/free_timeline.aspx
You can also find more details about our restore features in the specifications section of the Free edition on our site as well as the main overview page

Can you explain more about the Disaster Recovery? This is a key feature of what I need. I like being able to “go back in time” to get files, but I buy backup SW for those rare times when my system disk dies/goes crazy/gets corrupted, etc.
Does backup recovery allow a “bare metal restore?”
How does it work?
Would I still be able to backup to VXA tape, or would I need to continue to use GBM-Pro?
Thanks!

Hello,
The Disaster Recovery selection will backup your entire boot drive every 24 hours, meaning that your system files and folders needed to rebuild your system in case of complete system failure are backed up:
- Windows Folder
- Program Files
- Documents and program settings
-System state files
In case of system failure, all you need to do is boot from the Disaster Recovery startup disk that loads a pre-installation environment, without the need for any requirements to be previously installed such as software or operating system, follow the steps to start your restoration process and restore your system back to a previously working state.
Timeline does not support backing up to tape drives; however, you can backup to external hard drives, NAS and SAN devices, and in the near future Timeline will be moving to the cloud as well and support offsite backups through FTP and s3.

Just a stupid question.
Suppose I use the FREE version to backup my data and then encounter a system failure (such as harddisk crash).
Would I be able to recover the data in ANOTHER machine?
Thx.

Timeline creates native backups of files, which means in case you encounter such an hard drive crash you can easily just copy/paste the files you wish restored to your new hard drive. Be careful not to restore any system files though as that may create problems.

I own Genie Backup Manager Pro v8. Is there any advantage to using Timeline instead or in addition to?
June 20, 2010 - 1:34 am
There are lots of advantages for using Timeline’s continuous data protection, the main advantage is having zero scheduling, zero maintenance and zero resource use. Which means the Timeline will run silently in the background backing up your files automatically and giving you a Timeline to your files in which you can browse to a certain time and view/restore a file/folder at that time. Block level technology ensures that your larger files such as outlook .pst will only have changes to the file included in each backup run saving you lots of space and backup time. Will the free version backup c:\windows and subfolders as it does not for me?
If not will the Professional versions.
The backup breakdown from clicking on the pie chart reports file count -6051, size on disk -75.61 GB, % of Backup 100.00. Do those negative numbers mean that there is something wrong somewhere, such as it does not like a 2TB SATA on its own controller card?
July 6, 2010 - 5:20 am
The Windows folder is included in the Auto-exclude list in the preferences. The Professional version of Timeline does backup the Windows folder along with the Program files folder and Documents and settings folder when selecting the Disaster Recovery selection wich ensures 24 hour full system protection.
You can always contact support through our helpdesk to get a prompt reply regarding any problems you might be facing or if you have any questions regarding Timeline.

Hi,
I am evaluating your free Genie timeline version and it looks very promising. I like the set it and forget it feature and I plan to use it in conjunction with my Smart Sync Pro.
In one of your previous posts you mentioned that it has a disaster recovery feature : Disaster Recovery startup disk . Is there any video or step by step process on your site ?
And oh ! Excellent job for keeping the native file format INTACT ! That way I can acess my Files on another system without having to install another copy on the target system. Neat
Thanks

Hello,
I work with Genie-soft and wanted to thank you for your kind words and just point out that the free version of Timeline does not contain the Disaster Recovery feature. To get that you will have to download either the Home or professional version from our website. Regarding a step-by-step video it will be should be available shortly however if not, the Home and Professional come with Technical Support which you can contact through the help desk and ask any question to get a fast and prompt reply.

Oh yes, and I´m a domain controller. Is that the problem?
August 30, 2010 - 5:44 am
Hello Dennis,
Because you are a Domain controller the Free version of Timeline will not run as it is intended for non-commercial use only so it detects that you are the Domain controller and stops the setup. However, you can download and install our professional version of Timeline by visiting our site as it will work perfectly on your computer.

I’m trying to get feedback, but to no avail so far. Is it because I’ve asked my questions in Chrome? I’ll switch to IE & try again.
Is it necessary to create a disaster recovery boot disk for each individual PC in an office, or can I use 1 master boot disk across all PC’s?

I like your program but it is eating up my computers resources, I would like to keep it, but I would like to not have it run on startup. How would I do that?
Thanks

Hello Thomas,
I work with Genie9 and would like to thank you for your question, regarding Timeline’s performace please make sure that you always have the latest build by checking from ( Help –> Check for updates ), the latest build will delay Timeline’s startup if it senses that too much resources are being taken. Furthermore, make sure that you choose the correct performance mode when working on your computer, running in smart mode will take up very few resources while backing up, so you might want to run in smart mode and not in trubo mode when you need your computer the most.

Hello,
Thank you for your question Brian, I work with Genie9 and the Disaster Recovery disk only has to be made once, you can use it on any platform or any computer afterwards.

I have been using Pro for quite some time, and am very happy with what it does, but not so happy about how it does it.
I have two major problems.
1) On startup it takes about 3 minutes before Windows is useable, and if you try before Timeline is running properly, very often the computer locks up.
2) The PC is set up with two users. Timeline is set up on the Administrator account. If the second user logs on, the startup time is as above, but you get a message that Timeline is not set up.
Is it necessary to do a backup from both accounts, as the Administrator setup saves from both?
March 31, 2011 - 8:38 am
Hello Michael, Thank you for your insight. I work for Genie9 and the issues you described were both addressed and fixed in our latest build of the program. The latest build was optimized to handle Windows startup more efficiently by delaying the service if necessary in order to give other startup programs time to load. As for multiple users running Timeline, it is by design in the Home and Professional versions that each user on the machine has a specific backup job, which means that you will have to define a backup job for each user that will run once that user is logged in into Windows, the Server version of Timeline on the other hand only has one configurable job that runs on all users. Please make sure that you have the latest build installed to solve any problems you might have with Windows startup and if you are running into any problems or have any further questions make sure that you contact the Support team through the Helpdesk.
